Physiotherapy for a sportsperson is as indispensable as mother for a child. This was the observation hockey Olympian and Rajya Sabha Member Dilip Tirkey made in a workshop on `Management of Sports Injuries & First-Aid`, which was organised by Global Physiotherapy Cell (GPC) on the occasion of `World Physiotheraphy Day` here at Utkal Karate School today.
``Sportspersons can heal small injuries by taking the help of physiotherapy. It can also help them lengthen their career,`` said former India captain Tirkey. One of the all-time great defenders of the game, Tirkey emphasised the need of adequate number of well-equipped physiotherapy centres in Odisha and felt these centres could be beneficial for people in general.
Around 60 physical education teachers from different schools, coaches and students of Government College of Physical Education joined day-long workshop, which was organised with the support of Odisha Sports Journalists Association and Utkal Karate School.
Dr Rabi Narayan Dash, arguably the first physiotherapist of the state, provided useful solutions on injury problems of cricketers. ``Healing sports injuries without medicine and surgery is the main objective of physiotherapy,`` described Dr Dash.
The workshop concluded with GPC vice-president Dr Mukti Prasad Dash and secretary Dr Kirti Prasad Das educating PETs and coaches on First-Aid treatment and management of sports injuries.
